Project in the making

The minute Rael and Sarel assumed the modest farmyard next to their newly acquired café, in 2007, they immediately set about turning it into something special.

Enclosures were rebuilt, the pond was secured and new (often rescued) animals were brought in. And, slowly, but surely, Higgledy Piggeldy Animal Farm emerged to fulfil her role as a sanctuary for farmyard animals – and for people (especially kids) to enjoy interacting with them.

Environmentally - aware educationalist Ali Corbett (founder of Cape for Kids) has since joined this project in the making. Her educational programmes and booklets, tailor-made to aid the learning experience of visitors to the farm, have already added immense value.

What next? Well, here are some of the innovative initiatives we hope to realise at Higgeldy Piggeldy Farm in the near future:

  • a fynbos garden, where children can touch and learn about the flora of their heritage
  • outdoor educational games to teach children about the farm and its animals in a fun and educational way
  • enviro trails for older children to explore the area and complete user-friendly booklets

If you have any additional ideas or suggestions, or would like to tell us about your experience(s) at Higgeldy Piggeldy Farm, please send us an email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . We would love to hear from you!

Did you know?
Higgeldy Piggeldy’s animals have all been named by some of the imaginative children visiting the farm. There’s Mother Goose, Patches (boar), Lola (sow) and Stuart (Ram), to name but a few. Don’t forget to find out what the other animals are called the next time you visit.
