Umami
Top quality sushi at affordable prices
Founded in 2015, the Umami vision was simple – bring quality, fresh and affordable sushi and Asian inspired cuisine to the Noordhoek valley. Perfectly positioned on Imhoff Farm, Umami was a hit with locals and tourists alike and continues to delight their loyal customers.
The beautiful garden courtyard provides the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the delectable offerings, while inside, you will find an inviting dining area, superbly suited for families, birthdays or date night dinners. Umami also offers a catering service for small, private functions.
Well known for their delicious and seasonal menu, Umami strives to continue serving the best sushi in the valley.
The Team
Umami is the brainchild of Jacqui who has 25 years of experience in hospitality and an insatiable love for sushi. In 2015 Jacqui teamed up with chef Bo Zhang; as a loyal customer, she believed that he deserved a restaurant of his own.
Bo Zhang is one of the South’s best known sushi chefs. Hailing from China, Bo moved to South Africa in 2004 and began his career at Balducci’s in the V&A Waterfront. After a few years he was snapped up by Food Lover’s Market and put in charge of training young chefs in the art of sushi making. Two of his protégés, Mabuti and Marlon, have since followed him to Umami.
In 2018, Promise joined Umami, with an impressive 17 years of experience. He was trained by the master Japanese chef of CTFM in Gauteng and then moved to Cape Town to further his training and continue working with CTFM. Promise then headed up the Sushi Bar at The Lookout deck in Hout Bay for 6 years, before finally joining the Umami team.
The much-loved staff all live close by and the Umami team pride themselves on using local suppliers wherever possible.
